HAIR COLOR

HAIR COLOR SHADES OF WINTER

Cooler weather always brings images of rich, vibrant colors in nature and in fashion. As we pack away our pastel and white clothing, we should also think of what can be done to renew and revitalize our hair color. Hair color, just like fashion, has its seasons. Summer hair color is always lighter and brighter but, by the end of the season, can look dull and dry from too much sun, wind, salt water and chlorine. It is very important to start a moisturizing treatment to remove the dryness, but more importantly the color has to be enriched with deep wintry shades to complement your wardrobe.

No matter what shade you are – blond, redhead or brunette – low-lighting with rich colors is the technique used to achieve beautifully shaded and natural-looking hair color.

Hair Color NYC

BLONDS:

To enrich sun-faded blond hair while offsetting the snowy winter whites, various shades of gold are added to the hair with foil. Two to three different shades of gold are used, starting with a very deep golden caramel and alternating with medium honey and/or light golden low-lights. A light buttery gold glaze is applied to the whole head for the transparent all-over shimmer. The hair will look and feel healthier, allowing anything you wear to sparkle.Great look for the holidays!

REDHEADS:

For faded red hair, two to three different shades of color are used. We start by adding dark rich cinnamon, alternating with medium auburn with coppery tones and light bronze. We add a ginger color glaze to the whole head for shine and health.Looks extrasultry by the fireside!

BRUNETTES:

For faded brunettes, we add two to three shades of color depending on the tones that appeal to you.

  1. For a rich, warm brunette, dark sable brown and medium russet tones can be alternated with light golden brown to achieve that overall true chestnut color. A light golden caramel color glaze is applied to the whole head for shine and beauty.
  2. Some brunettes hate warm tones in their hair. For them, we’ll use a very dark steel brown color alternating with medium pearl ash brown, and light ash brown low-lights. We finish with a silver ash glaze to remove any visible warm tone. This type of brunette will look great with all the gray, silver and neutral colors of winter.
  3. For the brunette whose hair has darkened, now is the time to lighten and brighten dark locks. Various shades of red, caramel, honey and gold can be added to dark hair to add shine and interest to flat, dull hair. We finish with a clear glaze for added beauty and health. Perfection by candlelight!

Even if you don’t add anything new to your wardrobe, your revitalized hair color will make it feel fresh.

Dental Health is no Laughing Matter

Many parents worry about their child’s dental health and when to actually start proper dental care.  Often time’s parents consider taking their kid to a pediatric dentist who will specialize in kid’s oral hygiene and is familiar with the common dental issues among children. The main role of a dentist is to help with prevention and maintenance. Routine check-ups and daily oral care help anyone, especially kid’s, keep a fresh smile as early detection of problems will be discovered.

Typically a child’s first dentist visit is around their first birthday.  They will be taught simple brushing techniques and how to floss by your dentist.  Consistently brushing and flossing their little teeth will help maintain a better oral care and help prevent any future extensive dental work. These early visits are important as it will get them comfortable with the dentist and they will become more accustomed to the dentist office. Both parents and dentists are crucial in making sure the child’s first dentist experience is positive.

It is important to tell your child where they are going, but try and leave out details. For example, answer their questions with simple answers and do not tell your kid about that it might be painful. It is important to not cause excess anxiety before they even step foot into the dentist office. Stress how important the dentist is and how important it is to brush/floss all the time. Enforce that the dentist is a friendly doctor who is there to help!

Two and three year olds can begin using toothpaste but in small amounts. Ingesting toothpaste is dangerous as it contains fluoride. Make sure kids and toddlers are supervised as they brush their teeth to make sure that it is spit out after brushing and not swallowed.

Dentists can start preventative techniques at quite a young age. Sealant can be applied to the back teeth once they are permanent as this is where most chewing occurs. The dentist does this to protect the teeth from excess settling bacteria.  There are always those hard to reach places that brushing and flossing can miss so the sealant will help reduce the risk of oral problems.

If a more serious problem occurs, your dentist can recommend an orthodontist for treatment. Orthodontists are dentists who specialize in irregular teeth and dental placement. They can re-position children’s teeth and by applying corrective appliances to reshape the mouth during the early stages.

As children get older routine checkups with the dentist can range from every three months to annual checkups depending on what the dentist recommends.  As always, try to limit the amount of sugary foods and brush regularly to help out the dentist.

Enough about children – what about the adults? Dental health today is important to a lot of people – what easy tasks can you do to maintain that great smile and make your dentist happier? Check out these 5 simple steps that you may not have even known before.

  1. Try waiting to brush. Brushing your teeth immediately after a meal will wipe away the enamel – try waiting 30 minutes after you eat so the saliva in your mouth can help neutralize food acids. According to many dentists, you will want to especially wait if you have consumed foods high in acid.
  2. Diet and exercise are important, not only for your body but for your dental health too! Working out can lower your risk of developing gum disease! Vitamin D has also been found to reduce gum disease.
  3. Stop drinking bottled water as it tends to lack fluoride. Fluoride helps harden teeth and prevent cavities.  Some dentists even send their patients home with prescriptions for fluoride. Standard tap water is better for your teeth even when you add a filter to it.
  4. An electric toothbrush with a small head can really help remove plaque on the teeth and improve your overall dental health.  Dentists say it can help kill bacteria too!
  5. We all know flossing is highly important, but you can go beyond flossing and use interproximal brushes to reach even more plaque and germs. According to dentists, these brushes are designed to hit those hard to reach areas and achieve that cleaner dental feeling.

Neglecting your dental health could lead to more health concerns in the future. It is important to maintain a healthy smile and understand just how important oral hygiene is to your whole body.

Fishing Islamorada

February 22, 2011

It’s still a great time to fish in Islamorada and there are some absolutely great opportunities  fishing offshore as well on the flats.  Today we explored the reefs for Kingfish on live bait out in 90 feet of water.  Kingfish are a blast, can be very plentiful this time of year. These fish have a lightning-fast initial run as the fishing line literally smokes off the reel. I have seen a king leap from the water to attack a bait swimming on the surface and have been known to jump as high as twenty feet in the air to ambush their prey.  Imagine hooking up on one of these big boys with medium weight spinning gear as we did today with plenty of action. That was just the morning adventure in our off shore charter boat.

Now for a real treat and some delicious fare for tonight’s dinner. We moved in to the shallower reefs in 30-40 feet range targeting Yellowtail and Mangrove snapper. Yellowtail snappers may reach a length of 30 inches (75cm). This fish rarely exceeds weights of 5 pounds. Yellowtail snappers often form schools so when we find one we catch many. The Florida Record is 7 lbs., 5 ozs. That would be one huge fillet. Snapper has a firm texture, with lean, white flesh and a sweet flavor. Snapper can sometimes be very finicky when it comes to eating; one moment they are feeding like crazy and then next the bite may shut down completely. Fishing Islamorada in winter provides some of the best opportunity for fun and can make a life time memory for your family.

We also managed to land a few mangrove snapper from 2 to 10 pounds offshore. They can reach up to 17lbs. The Florida Record is 16 lbs., 8 oz. A friend just reminded me that biologists have now confirmed that a 29.5 pounds was caught in the gulf.  These wonderful tasting fish are notorious bait thieves, and provide a great fight on light tackle, making hard pulls to any structure trying to break you off.

Mangrove snapper is a common target for anglers; and is highly prized for its light and flaky meat. Mangrove snapper can be caught on a variety of baits, but is typically caught with live or frozen shrimp.

There are many restaurants in Islamorada that will prepare your catch (for a small fee) and add in some sides.  Our last client had it done 3 ways for a true smorgasbord. Blackened, fried or grilled you are in for a treat…best of all you know it is fresh.

Fishing Islamorada with Captain Brian Helms

This days fishing trip, like all successful  Islamorada  fishing charters started the night before. Making sure the boat is fueled, the tackle is ready, a look at the tide charts, a review of the weather and a huddle with the angler. While the rest of the country covered in snow and ice, we are seeing signs of summer. The air temperature is close to 80 with a little humidity. Wind are light from the south. My angler for the day is Bill Jenkins from Colorado. The great thing about fishing Islamorada with Bill is that he is excited just to go fishing. He doesn’t care how big or small, he is glad to alive and going fishing. On this day we have decided conditions look right to see if we can find some tarpon.  There are two distinctly different ways to fly fish for tarpon. One is to find a place where fish are on the move, find an ambush point and wait for them to come to you. The other is to find “laid up fish”. These fish are holding in an area in kind of resting mode. If the conditions are right these fish will float near the surface and at times even have their tails out of the water. The conditions looked right for fishing for laid up fish so about 7:30 am we launched my boat from my base of operations at La Siesta Marina and headed out to Islamorada backcountry. The first two spots we checked had a few uncooperative fish but at least there were some around. As we ran closer towards the Gulf of Mexico I started scanning the water for sharks as a back up plan if we didn’t find anymore tarpon.

Then I saw one laid up near the the boat and shut the engine down immediately so as not to disturb any other fish in the area. I jumped up on the poling platform and began pushing the boat slowly forward as Bill grabbed his 11wt loomis rod and took his place on the bow and began stripping out line from his tibor reel to get ready. The water was a little off color, a kind of clean green. If the water is too clean it can be difficult to approach a  Tarpon or get him to eat a fly but this water the fish should be a little less wary. I spotted a fish about 30 feet from the boat at our 10 o’clock and Bill put the fly on his nose. One slow strip and the fish inhaled the fly, made 3 quick jumps and was gone. Now the adrenaline has kicked in as we both started looking for the next one, Keys fly fishing can be like that. We threw at 3 more Tarpon without luck when I told Bill I could see some color in the water at 9 o’clock fifty feet out. Bill laid the black and purple bunny ( a fly tied with rabbit strip ) right where I told him. About the time the fly landed Bill could start to make out the fish’s profile and saw him sink out of sight. I told him to strip the fly slow and steady as it is not uncommon for these fish to sink down and then come up from under the fly. As if from nowhere the big head appeared and the fly disappeared into his cavernous mouth. As he turned his head to take off Bill set the hook and started to clear the line to the reel ” FISH ON ” .

Tarpon Fishing

150 PLUS POUND TARPON

This is what Tarpon fishing is all about. There are other fish that may carry more prestige than a tarpon but for sheer excitement nothing beats the thrill of seeing that mouth open and around your fly and the magnificence of having 100+ pound fish clear the water 30 feet in front of you. You are toe to toe with these fish. After a few more spectacular jumps we got the fish along side the boat and he was bigger then I realized. The  Tarpon was  over  150 pounds !!!

We took some pictures and marveled at his size as I held him  in the water next to the boat to give him a chance to recover from the battle. A couple of head shakes and a kick of the tail and he was on his way and so where we. We headed for home replaying the moments of the day in ours heads and happy to be alive and Keys fly fishing.  Islamorada fishing charters are the best come down and join us for an exciting day.

Divorce Mediation

ABOUT DIVORCE MEDIATION – How long will this take?

Clients always call and ask me “how long will this take”.  The usual answer to this question applies here, too. “It depends….”  It depends on how organized you are, how many marital assets you and your partner have, how easily it is for you both to list your assets, find your statements, understand how your pension plan or annuity works, have your house assessed for full value, agree on all parenting issues, if any.  Presuming you have already made these decisions and are very organized it should not take more than two or three meetings.

The first phase of the divorce mediation process is gathering the documents, and information.  Next you and your partner will discuss what you own separately, and what you own together and how you want to divide your assets.  If you are parents, then there are other issues to discuss such as custody, both legal and physical (meaning where the child actually resides) and support issues.

After both of you and your divorce mediator have worked your way through coming up with a plan for the division of marital assets and the parenting of your child, then a divorce mediator will write up what is call a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between you and your partner.  Each of you then take this MOU to review attorney who makes sure that your interests are represented in the agreement.  Since the mediator is neutral, the review attorney looks at the MOU from the perspective of his/her client only.  Once the MOU is reviewed by both your attorneys, it is ready to be turned into a  full divorce agreement and filed by an attorney.  Lawyers will charge for reviewing the agreement, writing it up, and filing it.  The NY Center for Divorce Mediation works with many lawyers who charge affordable fees for these services.

In order to work through the mediation process in a relatively smooth manner, it is best for you to have the following documents ready:

1.  List of any items jointly owned and not yet divided between the two parents.(Cars, jewelry, collections, real estate, etc.)

2.  Bank account statements: savings, checking and money market accounts (if applicable). Must have the name of the institution, amount held in the account and last four digits of the account for all accounts held by either partner regardless if the account is the sole property of one parent.

3.  Statements relating to any IRAs, Pensions, and other retirement accounts for both parents.

Stocks, Bonds, etc.

4.  List of all debts.  Loans, credit cards, personal and shared.  Debt is a marital asset and will need to be divided at the dissolution of the marriage.

5. Taxes – Filing jointly or separately for this and next year.  Back taxes, debt, refunds.

If you have children, then you will need to settle on the amount of child support to be awarded to the custodial parent.

The Child Support Standards Act states that for one child you determine the recommended amount of support to award the custodial parent by taking 17% of the non-custodial parent’s

2010 Gross Income less Social Security, Medicare, NYCIT.  That amount is then divided by 12 to determine the amount awarded each month.  This is the recommended amount and can be adjusted for cause either up or down depending on circumstances and wishes of the parents.

When you prepare to mediate you may want to think over a few issues before hand.

1. Who will be the custodial parent?  Will you share in major decision making with the other parent when it comes to medical, religious, educational and other issues of importance?

2. Holidays.  How have you been dividing the time each parent spends with their child.  What has been working and what might you like to change?

3. In the event that one of the parents dies, will the other become the sole custodian?  Who will be the guardian if both parents are deceased?

4. Will you have a College fund for your child?  How will you save money for it?

5. Wills and life insurance.

6. Expenses for baby sitting, school, camp, extra curricular and after school programs? (if applicable)

7. Discuss what you and the other parent will do if one of you needs to relocate for any reason.

These are most of the issues that you will discuss in divorce mediation.

How long will all this take?  For some couples who have been living separately for a year or more, not too long, if they have already made some of these decisions.  For couples who have been living together and have children, it may take more time.  In any event, I do believe that divorce is 90% emotional and only 10% legal and financial and occasionally people need to take time working through the divorce mediation process, and arrive at a mutually acceptable resolution to their partnership.  And, sometimes, partners are both already resolved and ready to do the paperwork.

So it depends.
